Chapter Twelve

The ride was filled with an uncomfortable silence, yet it was almost deafening as we moved deeper into the Darklands. I surveyed the rough terrain, memorizing how we traveled through it, free of attacks on our lives by creatures. We’d been riding for hours before we encountered anyone.

We dismounted, and I was told to stand with the women while Torrin moved to a group of men approaching us. Behind them was the wall that divided us from them, dark from light. Sliding my gaze around the high guarded wall, I frowned.

“That’s a problem,” Amo chuckled. “You got fucked last night?” My head spun at her change of topic, which I was certain she’d done on purpose.

“No, I didn’t. I know that is a problem. Find a weakness because it has to have one. We need to know what it is, so we don’t end up stuck behind it for longer than needed,” I returned.

“I heard you screaming Torrin’s name at the top of your lungs,” Tabitha ground out, her eyes slowly searching the wall. “There, far right. That’s a crack, and with a little help, the wall should come down easily.”

“I was in his dreamscape, and he gave me release after I partook of the moonflower-spiked whiskey. I am pretty sure they were showing us our weaknesses. I think we should be more careful about the food and drink we consume.”

“Back up, dreamscape? How is that any different from just fucking him?” Amo asked curiously, with no judgment in her tone.

“Because my body didn’t find release,” I supplied while blushing. “My mind, however, had the longest, most intense orgasm of my life in that place.”

“Did he fuck you?” Tabitha asked and turned as the other girls listened. “Lexia, come on! You’re the only one clinging to that oath, and we’re all left to deal with your painful screams when the moon calls you. Give us the goods!”

“No, because he wants me to be fully aware when he takes me,” I admitted, watching their eyes get large and wide as they nodded. “I think he may be man enough to sate whatever is wrong with me that keeps me unsatisfied.”

“You are missing your mate,” Amo announced. “That’s why you can’t come with some boring ass dick. You’re a forever kind of woman. You cling to the idea that sex should mean something more than just basic needs,” she scoffed, buffing her nails on her chest while looking at me pointedly.

“Like I’d get a mate, asshole? No, I’m not anyone’s mate. Could you imagine being saddled with me? The poor prick would probably off himself before allowing me to claim him, anyway.” I breathed and then noted Amo’s eyes had moved over my shoulder.

I turned, staring into the frosted glare of the male who had been silent behind me for most of the ride. Hell, Chivalry had even kept his distance from Torrin, choosing to nudge my leg instead of his. I wasn’t sure what had changed, but something had. He’d been cold and distant the closer we got to the gate guarding the way into the Kingdom of Night.
